Insta360 Luna Ultra review: the vlogging camera I use for cinematic travel and hotel videos

  • September 2026

My honest review of the Insta360 Luna Ultra after using it since July 2026 for travel vlogs and hotel films.

Insta360 Luna Ultra review: the vlogging camera I use for cinematic travel and hotel videos

Insta360 gifted me the Luna Ultra in July 2026. The opinions are my own.

I have been filming with the Insta360 Luna Ultra since July 2026. It is now the camera I reach for when I vlog my travels in a cinematic way, and when I film hotels.

What I used before

Before the Luna Ultra, I vlogged with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

How I use it

  • Cinematic travel vlogs, on the go.
  • Hotel videos, for the stays I film.

Insta360 Luna Ultra: the key specs

Two Leica lenses. The main camera uses a Leica Summicron lens on a 1-inch sensor, at f/1.8, the equivalent of a 20mm. A second telephoto camera sits next to it, with a 1/1.3-inch sensor at f/2.0, the equivalent of a 60mm.

Video. Up to 8K at 30 frames per second, with Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log for colour grading.

Stabilisation. A 3-axis mechanical gimbal, combined with electronic stabilisation.

Weight. Just over 200 grams, so it lives in a coat pocket.

Screen. A 2-inch OLED touchscreen that detaches and becomes a remote.

Audio. A built-in microphone on the camera and another on the remote, plus wireless microphone support.

Leica looks. Three Leica colour profiles, Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome, plus cinematic filters.

What I love about the Luna Ultra

1. The detachable screen

My favourite feature. The 2-inch OLED touchscreen comes off the camera and becomes a wireless remote, with a live view of what the lenses see, from up to 20 metres away. You can leave the camera on a tripod, frame yourself, zoom and start recording from a distance. The remote even has its own microphone.

2. The 12x zoom

Five focal lengths, up to 12x zoom. Reviewers agree that quality stays nearly lossless up to 6x, thanks to the telephoto lens, and that beyond that the camera crops into the sensor.

Here is how I use the zoom:

3. The Leica filters

The Leica colour profiles give a cinematic look straight out of the camera, which means far less grading afterwards. On a hotel film, that is hours saved.

4. The gimbal

Three axes, mechanical. Walking shots hold, and that is the whole reason a camera like this exists rather than a phone.

Any downsides?

Honestly, none for me. In my use, the Luna Ultra is perfect. That is worth saying plainly: I film short takes, in daylight, and I never asked this camera for something it could not give.

To be complete, here is what other reviews point out, so you know before you buy:

  • Heat on long takes. In one test, the camera shut down after about 44 minutes in 4K at 120 fps, and after about 49 minutes in 8K at 24 fps.
  • Two batteries to charge, one in the camera and one in the detachable remote.
  • The switch between the two lenses around 3x zoom can sometimes show a slight colour difference.

My favourite setting

Leica Vivid. It is the profile I use.

And for hotels: the detachable screen on a tripod, so I can frame the room, walk into it, and start the shot from inside the frame. That is the single feature that changed how I film stays.

Accessories I use

  • The protective case. It comes in the Standard Bundle, with a wind guard, a handle and a wrist strap.

Price

The Luna Ultra starts at €729 in Europe ($769.99 in the US) for the Standard Bundle. A Creator Bundle adds a Mic Pro wireless microphone, a wide-angle lens, a battery handle and a carry bag.

Insta360 Luna Ultra FAQ

Is the Luna Ultra better than the DJI Osmo Pocket 3?
For me, yes, and it is what I switched from. The detachable screen, the second lens and the Leica profiles are what did it. The Pocket 3 remains excellent and cheaper.

Does the zoom really work?
Up to about 6x, yes, thanks to the telephoto lens. Beyond that the camera crops into the sensor and it shows.

Can you film yourself with it?
Yes, and that is its best trick: the screen comes off and becomes a remote with a live view, up to 20 metres away.

Does it overheat?
On long takes in the highest modes, yes. Tests report shutdowns at around 44 minutes in 4K120 and 49 minutes in 8K24. It has never been a problem in my use, because I film in short takes.

How much is it?
From €729 in Europe for the Standard Bundle.

Who should buy the Luna Ultra?

It is for people who have a budget for a vlogging camera. It is not cheap, but it is clearly worth its price.

Final thoughts

After the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, the Luna Ultra is now my vlogging camera. The detachable screen, the 12x zoom and the Leica filters make it the camera I use for my cinematic travel vlogs and my hotel films.
