Kawaguchiko travel guide: up at 4:30am to see Mount Fuji

  • Kawaguchiko, Japan
  • September 2026

One night at Lake Kawaguchi from Tokyo: how we chose the date on a visibility forecast, the race to the lake at sunrise, udon with gold leaf, and what to pack.

Kawaguchiko travel guide: up at 4:30am to see Mount Fuji

We were in Tokyo from 27 October to 1 November 2025, and we double booked a night at Lake Kawaguchi, on 28 to 29 October, to be sure we would see Mount Fuji.

How we picked the day

We used a Mount Fuji visibility site, and booked the night that looked best.

The sites I would use: isfujivisible.com gives a visibility score with separate morning and afternoon forecasts for the Kawaguchiko side and the Hakone side, ten days ahead. Fujigoko.TV has the live cameras around the five lakes, and the Yamanashi prefecture runs its own Fujisan Watcher cameras. Check more than one: clouds can hide the mountain from one side while the other stays clear.

Booking two nights on different dates, and cancelling one, is the trick if your dates are flexible. That is what we did.

When is Mount Fuji actually visible?

Rarely, is the honest answer. The mountain is clear only a fraction of the year, and the pattern is strongly seasonal.

  • November to February are the best months. Cold dry air from Siberia clears the sky, and the peak is capped with snow. In official observations at 8am from Fuji City in 2025, the mountain was fully visible on 79 percent of days in February, and around 61 percent in December, January and November.
  • June to August are the worst. The rainy season and the summer humidity can hide it for weeks. June scored 7 percent of fully visible days in the same observations.
  • Early morning is best, whatever the season. The air is coldest and clearest at dawn, and clouds build around the summit as the day warms up. If you can only be there once, be there at sunrise.

We went at the end of October, which is the start of the good season. It worked.

Kawaguchiko overview

When: the night of 28 to 29 October 2025.

How we got there: by bus from Tokyo, the evening before.

Where we slept: Hostel Labeek, about fifteen minutes on foot from Lake Kawaguchi.

How long I would stay: you can easily spend a week, to go round all the lakes. But it depends entirely on whether Fuji is out.

Good to know: from Tokyo, the highway bus leaves from Shinjuku and takes about two hours to Kawaguchiko station. By train it is Shinjuku to Otsuki on the JR Chuo line, then the Fujikyu line to Kawaguchiko, around two hours as well.

Sunrise at the lake

Up at 4:30am. At 5am we found the shared bikes, and managed to unlock them.

Then a race against the clock to reach the lake before the sun, with its shadow already drawing itself on the mountain.

Good to know: the shared bikes are the fastest way to the lake at that hour, when nothing else runs. Register on the app the night before, because unlocking them at 5am in the cold is not the moment to discover how it works.

The rest of the day

We walked all the way around the lake, and then we simply got lost in the small streets of Kawaguchiko.

Where we ate: 51udon

A big wooden place along a road, in Shimoyoshida, Fujiyoshida, one station down the line from Kawaguchiko. We had a very good udon there, and mine had gold leaf on it.

Good to know: 51udon serves handmade udon in the Yoshida style, the thick chewy noodles of this region. The wagyu tempura udon with its gold fleck is the one people come for, and there are vegetarian bowls too. It is open for lunch only, from 11am to 2pm, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. There is a car park next door.

What to pack

Gloves and warm clothes. At 5am by the lake in late October, it is cold.

How long do you need in Kawaguchiko?

One night is enough for the sunrise. A week if you want to go round all five lakes, and if Fuji cooperates.
